If You Build It . . . Oh, Never Mind

No CommentsSometimes, building stuff works out: Roy Kinsella got to play catch with his dead father. Other times, not so much: The Tacoma Narrows Bridge was, um, rather shaky. Lawyers love to tinker. Especially solo and small firm lawyers, whose businesses are so completely in their own hands. If they can’t find a system that works

Dual Threat: Why Keeping Two Calendars is a Terrible Idea
- January 3, 2017

I find it strange that many malpractice insurance applications continue to ask lawyers whether they maintain a ‘dual calendar system’ — because it is, and always has been, a terrible idea. Keeping more than one calendar invites transposition errors. Plus, it’s more likely that any one person will fail to do two things, than any

A Few of My Favorite Things: Holiday Sampler

Just a sprinkling of loosely-connected musings in the approach to the holidays. This is kind of like the time I bought my sister a collection of various bags of potato chips from 7-11 for Christmas. (I was in college. I think.) . . . (1) This is a good time of year to scope out

In the Valley of the Shadow of Death: Trickle-Down Economics for Artificial Intelligence in Legal
- December 16, 2016

All of the technology innovators in the legal sector are pushing artificial intelligence as the next big thing. They’re talkin’ all about the robot takeover, and how, if solo and small firm lawyers don’t adapt or get out of the way, it’s curtains for them. Only, solo and small firm lawyers just don’t give a

Both Sides Now: Cloud Services End Internal Law Firm Debates Over Mac vs PC
- December 9, 2016

- Category: Technology
There is still some discussion over whether law firms can efficiently accommodate both Mac and PC users. I’m not sure why. To my mind, that one’s been solved. Back in the day (like five years ago, not the 1880s), it was far more difficult to absorb Mac users into what were, traditionally, PC-based law firms. -
All-Star Game: Software Performance Reflects the User, Too

There’s no perfect software (excepting ‘Tecmo Super Bowl‘); and, lawyers, who professionally pick nits, are harder to please than other business software customers, even excluding considerations respecting professional ethics requirements. Of course, usability is a two-way street. Software vendors have to build and update truly useful platforms for law firms; but, law firms must also

Area 51: How To Restrict Law Firm Data
- November 21, 2016

Sure, I believe in aliens. I love ‘The X-Files’. I’ve even been to Roswell. But, you know what’s alien to a not insignificant number of small law firms? Effective data controls. To that end, I intend to examine three potential security loopholes, and then the methods to close them. Logging In. There are a number

That is, after you panic, and flee your office in terror. When you return, to the smoking carcass of the device you had relied upon for so very long, it’s easy to feel like all is lost. But, it isn’t — as long as you’ve backed up your data. Many law firms still run on

What is Law Practice Management Consulting?

In a nutshell (a large one), law practice management consulting is business management consulting for lawyers and law firms. Broadly speaking, anything that touches modern business management can be related or applied to law firms; things like: acquiring insurances, entity selection, data management, systems development, human resources, etc. For lawyers and law firms, as for
